A Culture Days Primer

Culture Days is a collaborative pan-Canadian volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement by all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

In 2006, leaders of Canada’s largest arts organizations (as members of The Canadian Arts Summit) commissioned a feasibility study to assess the viability and appropriateness of launching an annual cross-country celebration of arts and culture. The study examined the annual 3-day Journées de la culture event produced in Quebec as an original, dynamic, internationally-recognized Canadian model for raising public participation and engagement.

The Journées de la culture model best responds to the objectives identified by arts and cultural leaders across Canada because it:

  • Appeals for generosity, solidarity and collaboration;
  • Equally values the cultural life of urban and rural communities alike;
  • Encourages the use of collective resources;
  • Is produced with a unifying spirit, bringing together the best energies in the country

Culture Days is a collaborative movement that relies on your participation. Everyone has a role to play: as an artist, a cultural professional, on behalf of an arts organization or a municipality, as a business person, as a member of the public…etc. everyone can contribute to the Culture Days movement. Join this exciting cross-country network and invite your friends, family and colleagues to do so too!. Browse 2011 Activities to find out about activities already planned in your neighbourhood and learn more about what to expect as Canadians from coast to coast to coast prepare for the second annual Culture Days event this fall.

This year Culture Days Events are being held nationwide over a three day period, September 30 - October 2. Check the official website for activities that are happening in your neighbourhood
